Help! The Server’s Down (And It’s Not the Only One)

My servers down - Help!

Researchers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in the United States have identified patterns of internet usage and behaviours that indicate when a person may be suffering from depression. The anonymous study of 216 undergraduates discovered that those students who showed signs of depression in an initial test switched between several applications, used more file sharing services, chatted online and emailed more and used high bandwidths (associated with playing games and watching films) than the other participants.

You’ve got mail!

So what? You might ask. Well, the lead researcher of the piece is reported to be interested in developing software, using the findings of the research, for use on home computers and campus networks. The aim of the software would be to help individuals determine if their online behaviour and usage patterns indicated symptoms of depression.

“The software would be a cost-effective and in-home tool that could pro-actively prompt users to seek medical help if their Internet usage patterns indicate possible depression…”

Dr Sriram Chelleppan, lead research of the study

So, could the future see a time when an email alert prompts people to take action and seek help for depression?

Ways to help yourself

There are a number of effective ways to treat depression, from therapy to medication to alternative treatments and a health care professional will be able to advise you on which way will work best for you. Where hypnotherapy can be useful and effective is in the areas of sleep, stress management, relaxation and channeling negative thought patterns.

With a choice of CDs and MP3s to listen to you can listen to these hypnotherapy tracks in the comfort of your own home. (Please do NOT listen to them as you drive or exercise).

If you are having trouble sleeping then Achieve Inner calm will help you to clear your mind, allowing you to fall asleep with ease.

If stress is causing your depression then this comprehensive course How to Be a Stress Survivor will help you to unravel your negative thought patterns and help you change how you think, behave and feel.

The symptoms of depression can make you feel helpless and hopeless. The software that the Missouri researchers hope to develop could allow a lot of people to ask for help in time and that can only be good news.
